Vaitheeswarar Temple

The Vaitheeswarar Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in Poompuhar, Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Lord Shiva as Vaitheeswarar (the healer god). It is believed that Lord Shiva, in this form, blesses devotees with good health and cures ailments. The temple is part of the Paadal Petra Sthalams, meaning it is one of the 275 temples glorified in the Tamil hymns of the Nayanmars, the Tamil poet-saints.

The temple is renowned for its sacred Navagraha (nine planets) shrine, where devotees pray for relief from planetary doshas (afflictions) in their horoscope. The Vaitheeswarar idol is depicted with a healing touch, symbolizing the divine power of curing diseases. The temple's architecture follows the traditional Dravidian style, with intricately designed gopurams (gateway towers), vast courtyards, and large mandapams (pillared halls).

One of the most unique features of this temple is the theertham (holy tank) called "Malaimel", where devotees take a ritual bath, believing it will purify their body and soul. The temple also has an association with the mythological story of Rama and Vibhishana, and it is mentioned in several ancient texts, including the Skanda Purana.

The Vaikasi Vishakam festival, celebrated annually, attracts numerous pilgrims seeking the blessings of Lord Vaitheeswarar for health and prosperity.
